A scientific trip is a fieldwork activity undertaken by a scholarship student once during a single academic stage to collect data and information related to their research and thesis.

Article fifteen of the Scholarship and Training Regulations for university staff specifies the rules regarding a scientific trip for a student abroad. It states: 'A scholarship student may undertake a scientific trip while preparing their thesis, once during a single academic stage, either to Saudi Arabia or elsewhere outside the scholarship headquarters, according to the following conditions:

- The student's supervisor must recommend the necessity of the trip for the research.
- Approval from the cultural attaché.
- Approval from the department and college council, or the institute and its equivalent, and the university’s scholarship and training committee.
- The duration of the scientific trip must not exceed three months.
- If the trip is to Saudi Arabia, the student must carry out research under the supervision of their department, and the department must prepare a comprehensive report on the trip.
- If the scientific trip is outside the scholarship headquarters to a country other than Saudi Arabia, the supervisor must submit a report on the trip to the cultural attaché, who in turn will provide it to the university.'
